Full-Property Buyout vs. Venue Plus Hotel Block for a Mountain Wedding

The two ways to run a Southern California mountain wedding, compared on privacy, logistics, timeline, cost structure, and what your guests remember.

The short answer. A full-property buyout gives you the whole venue and its lodging for the length of the booking, so your guests sleep where they celebrate and the event runs for days rather than hours. A traditional venue plus hotel block gives you a timed rental, usually about six hours, with guests sleeping in town and moving between the two by car or shuttle. The buyout wins on privacy, logistics, and time together, while the hotel block model can hold more people overnight and is easier to find. Sunstone runs the first model on 40 private acres with 40 sleeping on site and up to 200 at the ceremony.

What is a full-property buyout wedding venue?

A full-property buyout means the venue closes to everyone but your party for the booked dates. There is no other wedding that afternoon, no other guests in the rooms, and no shared lobby. At Sunstone the gate closes behind your guests when they arrive and the mountain is theirs until they leave.

What is a venue plus hotel block wedding?

The couple rents a ceremony and reception site for a fixed window, then reserves a block of rooms at one or more hotels nearby. Guests drive or ride a shuttle between the hotel and the venue, and the rehearsal dinner and morning-after brunch usually happen at a third and fourth location.

How do the two compare on privacy?

A buyout is private by definition. A hotel-block wedding shares the hotel with the public and often shares the venue calendar with another event on the same weekend. For a mountain wedding where the setting is the point, privacy is usually the reason couples choose a buyout.

How do they compare on logistics?

The buyout removes shuttles, hotel check-in timing, and the risk of a guest missing the ceremony on a mountain road. It concentrates every vendor on one property, which is why Sunstone works with regional vendors who already know the access road and the altitude. The hotel-block model spreads logistics across several addresses and several vendors' schedules.

How do they compare on cost?

Compare totals, not venue fees. The hotel-block model looks cheaper at the venue line and then adds a room block, transport, a rehearsal dinner venue, and a brunch venue. The buyout bundles lodging and multiple meals into one property quote. Sunstone prices per date and scope, with guest count, season, nights, and vendor scope as the inputs.

How do they compare on capacity?

A hotel block can sleep as many guests as the town has rooms. A buyout sleeps what the property sleeps. Sunstone sleeps 40 on site and hosts up to 200 at the celebration, with remaining guests staying in Big Bear proper, a short drive down the mountain.

Which model suits which couple?

Couples who want a weekend with their closest people, a private setting, and one point of contact tend to choose the buyout. Couples with very large guest lists who want every guest sleeping within walking distance of the reception tend to choose a town venue with a hotel block. Sunstone is built for the first group.
